Essential Training for Educators Working with UASC

This training is designed specifically for education professionals who support separated migrant young people in schools, colleges and alternative education settings.

The session provides a grounded, accessible insight into the journeys, experiences and challenges many young people face before, during and after migration — and how these experiences can shape their presentation, engagement and educational attainment.

We explore the realities young people encounter on arrival in the UK, including navigating Home Office procedures, attending interviews and assessments, and adjusting to life in a new country.

The training helps education staff understand the pressures young people are under, and how to create safe, supportive learning environments that promote stability, belonging and achievement.

All content is delivered through a trauma‑informed, culturally sensitive lens, with practical advice on how to build on young people’s existing strengths, promote resilience, and support them to thrive in education despite the challenges of a complex and often hostile immigration environment.

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Understand key pre‑migration experiences, including country‑of‑origin factors, reasons for flight, and issues relating to dates of birth.
  • Gain insight into common migration journeys, including experiences of trafficking, smuggling and exploitation.
  • Understand how the UK asylum process works and how it can affect a young person’s wellbeing, behaviour and educational engagement.
  • Strengthen your ability to recognise and respond to the emotional, social and practical needs of separated migrant young people in education.

Who is it for? Education professionals who support separated migrant young people in schools, colleges and alternative education settings.

It was brilliant training, so informative and really increased my knowledge in this area.

SOCIAL WORK PRACTITIONER ON TRIPLE PLANNING TRAINING

I felt that the way the course was delivered was exceptional, the language used was easy to absorb and the use of examples made it all make sense.

INDEPENDENT SOCIAL WORKER

This was excellent training, I feel more informed and definitely more confident about the processes and triple planning. Jo facilitated the training brilliantly and kept interest throughout, allowing for discussion and questions and sharing her expertise. I would definitely recommend this training to others, I know this will make a difference in our practice and my management. Thank you.

INDEPENDENT REVIEWING OFFICER

Jo has so much knowledge and the volume of information about Triple Planning is huge but I think by the end of the day I had a lot more ideas of how to focus my plans more specifically to the young person and prepare them for all eventualities from the beginning rather than respond as the process is happening. Understanding that it is just about being aware of where to go or who to ask rather than having all the answers makes it feel less overwhelming. I know the resources and slides we were given will be used over and over again. I think this is essential training for anyone working with separated young people and only wish the circumstances of our immigration system were kinder.
