Triple Planning is a statutory responsibility and a critical component of every care and pathway plan for Unaccompanied Asylum‑Seeking Children (UASC) and separated migrant young people.

Although referenced in the statutory guidance Caring for Unaccompanied and Trafficked Children (DfE, 2017), practitioners are given little practical direction on how to carry out this essential work.

Our Triple Planning training provides the clarity, structure and confidence that local authorities need to meet their legal duties.

This course supports practitioners to embed Triple Planning as a core offer within their service, ensuring that every young person receives a lawful, safe and forward‑looking plan that prepares them for all possible immigration outcomes.

We strongly encourage a multi‑agency approach and recommend attendance from social workers, Independent Reviewing Officers, Personal Advisers, accommodation providers and other professionals involved in care and pathway planning.

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Understand the individual components of the Triple Planning process and why it is a statutory requirement.
  • Apply Triple Planning effectively when working with UASC — including both relevant and former relevant young people.
  • Navigate the implications of the Nationality and Borders Act 2022 and other recent legislative changes.
  • Develop creative, ethical and practical plans that meet young people’s needs within a complex and often hostile immigration environment.
  • Build confidence in safety planning to reduce risks of exploitation, homelessness and destitution.
  • Draw on best practice from across the UK and Europe to strengthen care and pathway plans.

Train with one of the UK’s leading experts in the field of Immigration

Below are our scheduled Open Access Triple Planning Training Courses, for individual practitioners and independent social workers.

Who is it for? Social workers, personal advisors, team managers, and local authority legal teams who are case-holding former relevant unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (USAC).

What an amazing training! Your knowledge and passion is both impressive and inspiring. I have worked in different roles with our unaccompanied asylum seeking children and had not before heard of triple planning, something I will take forward in my reflections during supervisions with staff. While it was a serious training, and it must be given the difficulties our unaccompanied minors face, you brought so much knowledge but also enthusiasm for what we can all be doing to make their lived experience better. What a powerful day!

SOCIAL WORKER

This was excellent training, I feel more informed and definitely more confident about the processes and triple planning. Jo facilitated the training brilliantly and kept interest throughout, allowing for discussion and questions and sharing her expertise. I would definitely recommend this training to others, I know this will make a difference in our practice and my management. Thank you.

INDEPENDENT REVIEWING OFFICER

Jo has so much knowledge and the volume of information about Triple Planning is huge but I think by the end of the day I had a lot more ideas of how to focus my plans more specifically to the young person and prepare them for all eventualities from the beginning rather than respond as the process is happening. Understanding that it is just about being aware of where to go or who to ask rather than having all the answers makes it feel less overwhelming. I know the resources and slides we were given will be used over and over again. I think this is essential training for anyone working with separated young people and only wish the circumstances of our immigration system were kinder.

PERSONAL ADVISOR

It was brilliant training so informative and really increased my knowledge in this area.

SOCIAL WORK PRACTITIONER ON TRIPLE PLANNING TRAINING

The training was really informative and will help in my practice of supporting UASC. Triple planning will give structure on how to write a plan to support UASC. Looking forward to undertaking further training for UASC.
