Strengthening Quality Assurance and Practice Oversight

This half‑day course is designed specifically for managers, senior practitioners and those responsible for the Quality Assurance of age assessments.

The session focuses on the oversight, scrutiny and decision‑making responsibilities that managers hold within the age assessment process, ensuring assessments are consistent, defensible and aligned with current legislation and case law.

The training provides a structured space to explore the challenges your Local Authority is facing, share learning across teams, and receive practical guidance on strengthening the quality and reliability of assessments.

Managers leave with enhanced confidence in supporting staff, identifying risk, and ensuring assessments meet legal and practice standards.

The course will help you to:

  • Update your knowledge of the current legislative framework for age assessment.
  • Understand recent case law developments, including both full Merton‑compliant assessments and Brief Enquiries/Short‑Form age assessments.
  • Identify common errors and practice pitfalls that are frequently challenged, and learn how to avoid them.
  • Strengthen your Quality Assurance processes with practical tools, reflective prompts and analytical approaches.
  • Engage in facilitated group discussion to explore real‑world challenges faced by social workers and Local Authorities, and receive tailored advice and guidance.

Who is it for? Managers, Senior Practitioners and those responsible for the Quality Assurance of age assessments.

It was brilliant training, so informative and really increased my knowledge in this area.

SOCIAL WORK PRACTITIONER ON TRIPLE PLANNING TRAINING

I felt that the way the course was delivered was exceptional, the language used was easy to absorb and the use of examples made it all make sense.

INDEPENDENT SOCIAL WORKER

This was excellent training, I feel more informed and definitely more confident about the processes and triple planning. Jo facilitated the training brilliantly and kept interest throughout, allowing for discussion and questions and sharing her expertise. I would definitely recommend this training to others, I know this will make a difference in our practice and my management. Thank you.

INDEPENDENT REVIEWING OFFICER

Jo has so much knowledge and the volume of information about Triple Planning is huge but I think by the end of the day I had a lot more ideas of how to focus my plans more specifically to the young person and prepare them for all eventualities from the beginning rather than respond as the process is happening. Understanding that it is just about being aware of where to go or who to ask rather than having all the answers makes it feel less overwhelming. I know the resources and slides we were given will be used over and over again. I think this is essential training for anyone working with separated young people and only wish the circumstances of our immigration system were kinder.
